Accounts: What to Know Before Creating Any Casino Account From India

On most casino guides, the registration page explains how to sign up. For readers in India, the honest version is different. Since 1 May 2026 online money games are prohibited under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025, and we do not walk anyone in India through opening an account with a real-money casino or bookmaker. This page explains what the law means, what risks an offshore account carries and how to close one you already have.

What the law covers

The Act prohibits online money games, meaning games where the user pays money or other stakes expecting to win money or other enrichment, whether based on skill or chance. It applies to services operated from outside India if they are accessible here. Offering such games, advertising them and facilitating payments for them carry penalties of up to three years and/or ₹1 crore for offering and payment facilitation, and up to two years and/or ₹50 lakh for advertising. Whether a player can face consequences under the Act or under state laws is something we have not verified; take legal advice if it matters to you.

Your data on an offshore site

Casino sign-ups usually ask for identity documents, an address and payment details. Giving these to a site that operates outside Indian law means trusting it with sensitive information without a domestic regulator to turn to if it is misused, leaked or sold. Fake casino sites are also used specifically to collect identity documents for fraud.

Payments and blocked accounts

Section 7 of the Act bars banks, financial institutions and any person from facilitating payments for online money games. In practice, that pushes offshore sites towards agents, personal accounts and other informal routes. Money sent that way can simply disappear, and there is no realistic way to recover it. Treat any request to pay through an individual or an unfamiliar channel as a red flag.

If you already have an account

Age and family

Online gambling sites are for adults only wherever they operate, and gaming advertising on social media often reaches young people. If teenagers use your devices or payment apps, check what is linked to them and set controls on spending.

What is allowed

The Act permits e-sports and social or educational games without stakes, overseen by the Online Gaming Authority of India. Creating an account on a free game with no money staked is a different activity from opening a real-money casino account.
