Live Casino: What the Stream Hides, and What the Law Says

Live casino games played for money are online money games under the 2025 Act, prohibited in India since 1 May 2026. This page explains the format for understanding only.

Live casino looks more trustworthy than a slot: a real person, a real wheel, real cards. That feeling is part of the product. This page explains how live games actually work, what the format does to the speed of losses and why, since 1 May 2026, playing them for money from India falls under the prohibition on online money games.

How a live game works

A dealer runs a physical table in a studio, usually abroad, and the action is streamed to the player's screen. Cameras and software read the result, settle the bets and update balances. The same studio table is often shown on many different casino sites at once, each wrapping it in its own branding.

The timer

Unlike a slot, a live table does not wait for you. A countdown opens and closes each betting window, and rounds follow one another continuously. The timer compresses decisions into seconds and makes it easy to keep betting round after round without stopping to think. In practice, live games can move money faster than people expect, precisely because there is no natural pause.

Familiar games in a new wrapper

Live lobbies often include card games that are part of social life in India, such as Teen Patti and Andar Bahar, alongside roulette, baccarat and blackjack. Familiarity lowers people's guard: a game played with family during festivals feels harmless. Online, with real money staked against a house edge on a continuous timer, it is a different activity. The 2025 Act defines an online money game by the money staked, not by whether the game involves skill or chance, so a familiar game played for money online is covered just the same.

Side bets and multipliers

Live tables add side bets and game-show formats with random multipliers. These pay large amounts occasionally because they lose more often; their house edge is usually higher than that of the main bet. They are designed to be exciting, not to be good value.

No demo, and why that matters

Because each round is a physical event, live tables offer no play-money version. Every round watched in a casino lobby is an invitation to start staking. That is one reason we do not suggest browsing live lobbies at all.

The legal position

Under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025, offering online money games to users in India is prohibited even when the service is operated from abroad, advertising them is prohibited and facilitating payments for them is prohibited. No live casino can be licensed in India for real money, because no such licence exists. Our home page sets out the sections and penalties.

Frequently asked questions

Is live casino legal in India?

Not for money. Since 1 May 2026, online money games, including live casino games played for stakes, are prohibited under the Online Gaming Act 2025.

Is Teen Patti online for money allowed if it is a game of skill?

The 2025 Act covers online money games whether they are based on skill or chance, so the skill argument does not take a money game outside the prohibition.

Why do live games feel more trustworthy?

Seeing a real dealer creates trust, but the house edge and the continuous timer work the same way regardless.

Are side bets better value?

Usually not. They pay more when they win because they win less often and carry a higher house edge.
