Online Betting and the 2025 Act: Understanding the Odds

Legal status in India: online betting for money is an online money game under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act 2025 and has been prohibited since 1 May 2026. This page explains how odds and markets work so that readers understand the maths; it does not recommend or facilitate any bet. Betting and the law →

Online betting was the most heavily advertised form of gambling in India before the 2025 Act, much of it built around cricket. Many people still receive offers, tips and "sure bets" through messaging apps. This section explains how betting odds are constructed, why the bookmaker wins over time and what the law now says, so that readers can recognise those offers for what they are.

Odds and implied probability

Decimal odds show the total return per rupee staked. Odds of 2.50 mean a ₹100 stake returns ₹250 if it wins. Every price also hides a probability: divide 1 by the odds. Odds of 2.50 imply 40 percent, odds of 1.50 imply about 66.7 percent.

The margin: how the bookmaker wins

Add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes in a market and the total is always more than 100 percent. The excess is the bookmaker's margin. On a two-way market priced at 1.91 on each side, each outcome implies about 52.4 percent, the total is about 104.7 percent and the margin is roughly 4.5 percent. Whoever wins the match, the book is built so that the bookmaker is paid. Combining bets multiplies these margins, as our bet types page shows.

Tipsters, "fixed matches" and other scams

Anyone selling guaranteed tips, inside information or "fixed match" predictions is running a scam. If they could predict results reliably, they would not need to sell the predictions. Common patterns include paid groups that show only winning tips, requests for an upfront fee, and pressure to deposit through a particular agent. Under the 2025 Act, facilitating payments for online money games is itself prohibited.

What the 2025 Act says about betting

The Act prohibits online money games, defined as games where money or other stakes are paid in the expectation of monetary or other enrichment, skill or chance alike. Online betting for money fits that definition. Offering it, advertising it and facilitating payments for it carry penalties, and the Act states that it applies to services operated from outside India if they are accessible here. The full summary, with sections and penalties, is on our home page.

What each guide covers

Each sport page explains how its markets work and where bettors misjudge them, as an education in the maths rather than a guide to betting: cricket, football, tennis and basketball, plus a page on bet types and fantasy contests.
