Sports Betting Basics: Reading Odds Before You Bet

This site's main subject is the Gamemania slot catalogue, but the same account often offers sports betting, and the maths of a betting line is worth understanding before anyone places a wager. These pages explain odds, margins and markets in neutral terms. They do not recommend bets, do not advertise promotions and do not describe any operator's sportsbook.

Two odds formats you will meet in Canada

Decimal odds show the total return per dollar staked: 2.50 means a C$10 bet returns C$25 if it wins, C$15 of profit plus the stake. American odds, common on North American broadcasts, use a plus or minus number around 100. A +150 line means C$150 profit on a C$100 stake; a -200 line means you must stake C$200 to make C$100 profit. Converting is simple: +150 is 2.50 in decimal, -200 is 1.50.

Implied probability and the margin

Every price hides a probability. Divide 1 by the decimal odds: 2.50 implies 40%, 1.50 implies about 66.7%. Add up the implied probabilities of all outcomes in a market and you get more than 100%; the excess is the bookmaker's margin. On a two-way market priced 1.91 and 1.91, each side implies about 52.4%, the total is about 104.7%, and the margin is roughly 4.5%. Comparing that total across markets tells you how expensive a market is before you think about who will win.

Live betting and cash out

In-play markets reprice during the event, sometimes every few seconds. The speed is the risk: decisions get made on momentum rather than on information. Cash out lets you settle a bet early at a price the bookmaker sets; that price includes margin too, so cashing out is a convenience, not a free option.

The provincial picture applies to betting as well

Gambling in Canada is organised province by province, and betting is no exception. In Ontario, the iGaming Ontario directory lists the regulated sites; in the other provinces, the lottery corporation's own platform is the regulated option. A licence from outside Canada does not authorise a sportsbook in any province. Our home page sets this out in more detail.

What each guide covers

The bet types guide covers singles, parlays, systems and props. Sport-by-sport explainers follow: basketball, football in both its Canadian and soccer forms, tennis and cricket. Each one explains the markets and the specific ways that sport catches bettors out.

Before any bet

Decide a weekly amount you can afford to lose and never chase a loss with a bigger stake. Betting on a team you support is the easiest way to overrate a price. If betting stops being entertainment, help is listed on our responsible gambling page.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert American odds to decimal?

For a plus number, divide it by 100 and add 1 (+150 becomes 2.50). For a minus number, divide 100 by the number without its sign and add 1 (-200 becomes 1.50).

What is the bookmaker's margin?

The amount by which the implied probabilities of all outcomes in a market add up to more than 100%. It is the bookmaker's built-in edge.

Is cash out a good deal?

It is a convenience. The cash-out price includes a margin, so on average it returns less than letting a fair bet run.

Does this site recommend bets?

No. These pages explain how betting works; they do not give tips or advertise offers.
